Today, many organizations follow the band wagon of transforming their business using digital technologies. The often used term is digital disruption by some of these organizations. There is also a trend to add digital in most initiatives to obtain management buy in and gain visibility.

What is truly a digital transformation? In an era where everything seems to fall into the 'digital transformation' bucket when there is technology involved, the true essence of digital transformation fades.

The key question to ask is what exactly is the transformation about. Is it implementing a solution (a digital one:) to automate processes, to replace other systems or to enable a major change in the way business works. The core idea should revolve around the business case and relation of this to your business model.

Eventually digital transformation should go hand in hand with innovation. Innovation breeds new thinking on business models, new business eco systems to look at, new partners who come from totally different industries.
